I didn't do every upgrade my trans made it 170k and still looked new inside with heavy towing and mild power improvements for most of that. It did however take a couple weeks to get.Ī google search for "4R upgrade" will lead you down a rabbit hole but you can decide what you feel is important to upgrade. They say they are built to match your truck, but I doubt that is not the case. I had the option to use those but since I wasn't having trouble already I didn't see the need for the extra $100. I think the 4R uses molded or bonded pistons, which are great, but you need to buy new pistons, reusing is like using a lip seal over. I think I updated the sprags as well just knowing they had age on them and had them fail before. I ended up buying the extra clutch kit just to have enough parts to get the clearances I wanted, I paid no attention to whether or not there was an extra clutch in it. The diesel generates too much heat for the cheap seal.Įxtra clutch kits are a mixed bag as well, extra clutches means thinner plates. Watch for the correct seal material especially on the TC seal. thrust bearings/washers is a toss up, but cheap to do while you are there. Had read the the mechanical diode (one way clutch) in the 4R is troublesome. Sonnax has some upgrades not provided by those two as well. Also converts TC to on off vs PWM application. You don't have to set it up for hard shift, but it does improve fluid flow and cooling. Don't fall for the low stall gimmick or anything like that. Having just gone through this on my E4 RacerXusa had the best deal for me on parts.ĭon't skimp on the torque convertor. You don't need the hard parts for a 4r that you would need building a E4.įor Low to Mid power a stock trans is fine, Just rebuild with Quality parts. Billet internals and converters as needed for your power level get you the rest of the way there.ĤR and E4 are not the same, just similar. But 99% of the upgrades are shit that the 4R100 comes with so a 4R100 with extra frictions and a harsher valve body (less slip) gets you 90% of the way there. You can learn a lot by googling around for E4OD upgrades and reading. Like I said, the diesel guys have been figuring out how to put some serious power through these for 20yr now. The ATSG manual has been bootleg'd so many times it took me 5min to google them up This will be a project requiring tools and skills that are advanced. The only E4OD I own doesn't need a rebuild and is getting ditched in favor of a manual because project truck deserves fun transmission. Some others have cut a relief in the cross member (Not my favorite idea.) Also some have ground the fins down on the pans, and cut the cross member, this is not the worst idea but again whatever will work should be looked at. (NOT THE FRAME, but the cross member) The #F4R100 pan will bolt onto the transmission and then you will see how long you will need to make the slots. My suggestion would be to slot the bolt holes on the cross member to allow it to move toward the rear of the truck for clearance. There are many different ideas and each will have it’s merits and difficulties. ![]() If you purchase through another source, it is up to them if they include the filter with your purchase.Įxtra filters are also available for your convenience.Īttention: See Service Bulletin For Leaking Issues in the: “Install Tab” Service Bulletin F5R110 / 4R100 in the right hand column.Īttention EXCURSION Owner: This application will require some modifications of the transmission cross member.
